Satterfield & Pontikes Construction was selected to build the Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC) and Joint Vehicle Maintenance Facility (JVMF) on a 60-acre site at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The facilities serve members of the Texas Army National Guard, Army Reserves and Marine Corps Reserves. Project features include: • JVMF (45,830 SF) with vehicle maintenance bays and three overhead cranes, including a 15-ton crane with 67’ span, 7.5-ton crane with 75’ span, and 4.5-ton crane with 24’ span • AFRC building (209,000 SF) is slab-on-grade with structural steel, metal deck and standing seam metal roof and provides assembly hall, classrooms, commercial kitchen, unit storage with arms vaults • AFRC and JVMF buildings also provide administrative, shower and locker areas, and maintenance/support areas • 7,800 SF pre-engineered unheated storage building • 3,300 SF vehicle wash bay pad • 1,800 SF fuel dispensing station • Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection components include blast-resistant windows and walls • Paving, parking, utilities, landscaping, two detention ponds with limestone retaining walls • Buildings designed and constructed for LEED V3.0 Silver certification The buildings incorporate sustainable design elements such as lighting controls, energy-saving HVAC systems and controls, recycled building materials, and water-saving plumbing fixtures. Detention ponds provide water for irrigation and help to reduce domestic water consumption. S&P set up a Building Information Modeling (BIM) virtual studio at the project site. The 3-D models were used for clash detection, schedule simulation of the structure and creating as-builts.
