New Orleans, LA
The Louisiana Department of Education selected Satterfield & Pontikes Construction to construct the new Landry High School in Orleans Parish as part of the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Quick Start program. After Hurricane Katarina devastated many area schools, Quick Start was launched to provide the children of New Orleans with 21st century schools. Dedicated in 1938, the original school was rebuilt in the 1950s and demolished in 2008 to make way for the new threestory high school, one of the first built in Orleans Parish in 50 years.
• The school is designed according to the new International Building
Code, which requires increased elevation to meet new fl ood
regulations, critical electrical equipment to be located on the third
fl oor, and the ability to withstand 125-mph winds
• An irrigation system, solar hot water system and other sustainable
features are expected to reduce energy costs by 30 percent
• A new state-of-the-art school-based health center (SBHC) doubles as
a community infi rmary employing a full-time doctor and nurse
• The central courtyard surrounds a mature magnolia tree, honoring
the original high school’s design
